Prayer As Practice

At day one of our recent Corpath Conference, Heidi Tratnik, one of our Corpath board members, did a great job opening the conference in prayer. As she did so, she led us through the Lord's prayer together. I really appreciated her desire and heart as she did that for us.

Later, during the conference, I made a comment during my presentation that stated,  "One of the highest displays of pride any one of us can show is by refusing or forgetting to consult or include God through prayer."  In other words, we believe we can do most things on our own and do not need to include God with any of it.

I wonder what our thoughts are about prayer as part of our every day business practice. As Corpath members, we are driven to solve problems, meet goals, and work with high levels of activity and productivity.   We are a highly competent people that get things done. We are also
a highly confident people, and, if we are not careful, that confidence can evolve, or devolve, into ego and pride.

Q:  Do you include prayer as part of your work practice?  Why or why not?

Prayer might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about business, but trust me, it's got a significant role to play. Let me break it down for you as we consider some thoughts supported with scriptures.

Finding Clarity and Guidance
We have those moments when we are faced with a tough decision at work, and not quite sure which way to go.  In those times, prayer can be our compass. In the book of Proverbs, it says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6). What this means for us is that when we're in a bind, we can turn to God in prayer, seeking wisdom and direction. It's like having the ultimate business advisor!

Here's an idea of how you can include it in your workday: Set aside a few minutes before you start your tasks to pray. Ask God for guidance, clarity, and wisdom in your decisions. It's amazing how this simple act can bring focus and peace to your work.

Handling Stress and Challenges
Let's face it, the business world can be a stressful place. When you're dealing with tight deadlines, demanding clients, or unexpected setbacks, it's easy to get overwhelmed. That's where prayer can help.

In Philippians 4:6-7, it says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

When feeling stressed or facing a challenging situation, take a moment to pray. Pour out your concerns to God, and you'll experience a sense of peace that surpasses all understanding. It's like a stress-relief button for your soul!

Building Relationships and Integrity
In business, relationships are everything. Building trust with colleagues, clients, and partners is vital. As Christian businesspeople, our integrity matters more than anything.
In Colossians 3:17, it says, "And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." This means that our actions and words should reflect our faith.

To include prayer in your workday for this purpose, make it a habit to pray for your colleagues, clients, and business partners. Pray for opportunities to show kindness, honesty, and integrity. Over time, this will not only strengthen your relationships but also shine a light on your faith.

Final thought...

Prayer is like the “secret sauce” that can add depth and purpose to your life as a Christian businessperson. It's about seeking guidance, finding peace in tough times, and living out your faith in the workplace. Give it a try, and you'll see the difference it can make in your daily grind.

My challenge is for you to include prayer as a necessary part of your work day. Here are some questions for you to reflect on your thoughts about prayer.

Consider them individually or talk about them with your Corpath group at your next forum meeting:

  • Am I setting aside dedicated time for prayer regularly, or do I find myself only praying when in need or crisis?

  • Is my prayer life focused on a genuine connection with God, or does it tend to revolve around a list of requests and needs?

  • Do I see positive changes in my life, character, and relationships as a result of my prayers, or does my prayer life seem disconnected from my personal growth and actions?

My Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, as I start this day, I come before you with a heart full of gratitude. Thank you for the opportunity to work, to make a difference, and to honour you in all that I do.

Lord, I ask for your guidance and wisdom as I face the decisions and challenges that lie ahead. Your Word reminds me to trust in you with all my heart, and I lean on that promise today. Help me to see the path you've set before me and to make choices that align with your will.

In the midst of the stress and pressures that may come my way, I seek your peace that surpasses all understanding. When anxiety creeps in, may your presence calm my heart and mind.

Father, I pray for the relationships I build as part of my work. May my actions and words reflect your love and integrity. Help me to be a beacon of light, a source of encouragement, and a trustworthy partner to those I interact with.

Lord, I also lift up my colleagues, clients, and business associates. May you watch over them, bless them, and grant them the desires of their hearts. Use me as an instrument of your grace to impact their lives positively.

In all that I do today, I commit to doing it in the name of Jesus, giving thanks to you, my Heavenly Father. May my work be a testament to your love, and may it bring glory to your name.

Amen
