This Too Shall Pass

How many times have you heard, or stated, “this too shall pass”?  We tend to use this statement as a bit of comfort when we hit hard times.  We console ourselves with these words of wisdom as we seek a pathway through life’s trials and even ascribe Christian values to the phrase and concept.

Some short research on Wikipedia suggests this statement came from a Persian adage, and is translated and used in several languages.  It reflects on the temporary nature of the human condition — that neither the bad, nor good, moments in life ever indefinitely last.

Even though this particular statement isn’t found as quoted anywhere in the bible, can we support the concept with Scripture?  I think we can. This philosophy emphasizes the impermanence of life's trials and tribulations, reminding us of God's sovereignty and the importance of faith.

What is the Scriptural Foundation?
In Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, we find a well-known passage that reflects the seasons of life: "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens..." This passage illustrates the cyclical nature of life, with both joys and sorrows.

We also find encouragement in 2 Corinthians 4:17-18, which reminds us that our present troubles are temporary, while our focus should be on the eternal:
"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So, we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

Q: How can a deep understanding of the temporary nature of life's challenges influence our decision-making as Christian business leaders?

What is the application in Business Leadership?
Embracing the concept of "this too shall pass" has practical implications. It encourages us to maintain an eternal perspective in our decision-making. This means not being overly attached to the temporary successes or failures of our businesses but rather focusing on the impact we can make for God's kingdom.

In James 4:13-15, we are reminded of the uncertainty of the future and the need to align our plans with God's will: "Now listen, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, 'If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'"

Q: How can we strike a balance between effective business leadership and the understanding that all things are temporary in the grand scheme of God's plan?

What about Spiritual Reflection?
The concept of "this too shall pass" invites us to reflect on our relationship with God and the trust we place in Him. It encourages humility, acknowledging that we are not in control of all circumstances.

Psalm 46:10 reminds us to "Be still and know that I am God." It is in these moments of stillness and reflection that we can find strength and solace in God's presence.

In
Isaiah 41:10, we are reminded of God's promise to be with us during difficult times: "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Q: How can we deepen our faith and trust in God as Christian business leaders, especially in the face of challenges and uncertainties?

Final thought…

In a world where we are deceived to believe we can build things to be “permanent”, we realize we absolutely cannot.  However, we worship a God who never changes.  Who never decreases in value and power.  Who loves us immensely. He shall never pass or fade away.  And in that, we find security, peace, and hope.

My Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I come before you seeking Your guidance and wisdom. I thank You for the assurance that in You "this too shall pass", and for the hope found in Your Word. Help me to embrace this concept in all I do, always keeping my focus on Your eternal plan. Grant me the strength to surrender my plans to Your will, knowing that You are in control. May I find solace in Your presence and deepen my trust in You, even when faced with trials.

Amen.
